December 11, 2011
Dear
Transportation Customer:
As
you may know, the transportation of hazardous materials, as defined by Federal
regulation, has come under increasing scrutiny over the past several years and
even more so since September 11, 2001.
Shipments
of hazardous materials have long necessitated very specific documentation,
labeling and placarding. Most different types of hazardous materials must be
segregated into different loads when moving by water.
In more recent years, regulations have required the training and
certification of all our employees involved with the movement or documentation
of hazardous materials.
The major steamship carriers, based on their increased costs of vessel stowage, security and regulatory compliance, are instituting a hazardous commodity surcharge and we find that we cannot absorb these additional costs.
Effective December 11, 2011, the following additional charges will be applied to hazardous material shipments:
1-2,000# = $46.00; 2,000-4000# = $55.00; 4,001-6000# = $85.50; 6,001-8,000# =$ 117.00; 8,001-9,999# = $149.00; 10,000# and over =$170.00
Please
note: if your
shipment contains more than one type of hazardous material, and they cannot be
shipped in the same load per the Federal regulations, the surcharge will apply
to each non-compatible type of hazardous material.
This
surcharge does not apply to hazardous materials shipped as:
Alaska
Traffic Company will apply these charges only when billed by the water
carriers. Thank you once again for
your business. We look forward to
serving you in the future.
Sincerely,

Nicholas
